Another Point of View

California may be on my mind because I'm reading the works of one of the West's biggest fan.
"Smell of chlorine and wet cement and lawn. A little wind moved the wisteria pods hanging from the arbor along the front of the dressings rooms. He sat up, straddling the board, rolling his shoulders and stretching his arms, powerful and loose. He looked like something on a billboard--It's Lucky when you live in California. Sabrina recalled a novelist friend who after a Hollywood contract went away cursing everything but the bodies of the natives. "They're creating a beautiful race," he said in envoi. "The brain may wither away to the size of a lentil and the moral sense may atrophy entirerly, but they're going to look like Tahitians."
~Wallace Stegner
