Ways to Charm Me
Haven't had one of these posts in a while but this city never stops wowing me. The latest, the promise of fall in the air.

Thinking
I am about to enter my sixth month of living in NYC. When I moved everyone warned me to give it six months, that after six months I would suddenly realize that I knew the city, felt at home etc. The weird thing is, I have felt at home here for months already. Maybe the city was already running through my blood. Or maybe it was the days I spent early on walking the streets and soaking everything in or maybe it's the days I've spent since, walking around trying to find my accounts and attempting to open new ones. But I've suddenly found that I know and love this city. I think what has changed at this six month mark is that I now have to invent who I am here. And in a city of 8 million the possibilities are endless. Stay tuned.

Listening
To KPBS on my computer. The morning traffic report brought tears to my eyes. Miss those 5, 78 and 15 freeways, but perhaps not as much as the people who live along them.

Not So Taxidermy Chic but Still Cool
Aunt Jill I know you will appreciate this, "Madonna Inn" goblets for sale at one of the coolest shops in the world.
We are so cool we were into these glasses about 20 years ago! Wish I knew what happened to my special pink one!

Some familiar faces graced NYC these past few weeks:
Having a house guest is a totally different experience than hosting people at Beryl St or even at the Knoll. Living by yourself in a shoebox is fine but two can get cozy. That said, having people to show around the city made me realize how much of it I have learned in the past five months. And how much of I have yet to see. It is wild how much is jammed onto this little piece of land!

Stay Tuned
Due to a number of visitors (yeah!) I have had little time to devote to the blog or you, my dear readers. I will be back soon. I promise.

Another Point of View
California may be on my mind because I'm reading the works of one of the West's biggest fan.
"Smell of chlorine and wet cement and lawn. A little wind moved the wisteria pods hanging from the arbor along the front of the dressings rooms. He sat up, straddling the board, rolling his shoulders and stretching his arms, powerful and loose. He looked like something on a billboard--It's Lucky when you live in California. Sabrina recalled a novelist friend who after a Hollywood contract went away cursing everything but the bodies of the natives. "They're creating a beautiful race," he said in envoi. "The brain may wither away to the size of a lentil and the moral sense may atrophy entirerly, but they're going to look like Tahitians."
~Wallace Stegner

Thinking
I can't believe that September is upon us. Where did the summer go? Today I was homesick, really really homesick for what feels like the first time. Thoughts of home, both of my homes-San Diego and Calistoga-brought a real sense of longing. Is is the changing season? I miss being someplace familiar, someplace where I know what to expect. I want to feel the Santa Anas and smell crush in the air. I want to walk on the beach in late September and I want to see the familiar line of the Mayacamas mountains. I know that it's a process, this moving and becoming at home in a foreign place but sometimes it's overwhelming and I wish I could click my heels and find myself back in California, where I seem to have left my heart.
